Calculation method of material size for cover and cover of hardcover book
hardcover book is a kind of binding form that is more exquisite in book publishing. Compared with paperback books, hardcover books have the advantages of exquisite materials, solid binding, beautiful decoration and long-term preservation. Classic works, fine print books and reference books that are often read are generally hardbound. With the development of publishing industry, there are more and more hardcover books. As cover designers and printers, they should have a certain understanding of the materials used for the cover and protective cover of hardcover books and their size calculation, so as to avoid affecting the beauty of books due to improper size in the design work, and causing economic losses and material waste in serious cases
several common forms of hardcover books:
according to the form of spine, there are two kinds of spine: square spine and round spine
the thickness of the square spine is thicker than the book block. Due to the folding of the book block and the cable line, the height of the spine is higher than the book block, and the more printing, the more obvious. Therefore, the hardcover book with square spine should not be too thick, which is generally applicable to the spine within 20mm
circular spine, because the positions of the front and back book stickers are slightly different, the folding part of the book stickers is slightly semicircular, distributed on an arc surface, and its thickness is balanced. The opening of the book block is adapted to the convex circle of the spine, which is concave. Therefore, it is better to use a round spine for thicker books. The round spine book is processed by rounding, and the back ridge is in an arc shape. Generally, the thickness of the book block is taken as the chord and the arc is 130 °. Round ridges can be divided into two types: round back without ridges (only round back without ridges) and round back with ridges (round back with ridges, and the height of ridges is generally the same as the thickness of the paperboard of the book case)
according to the material used, it can be divided into two types: the same material on the ridge and the different material on the ridge
the spine is made of the same material, that is, the spine and the cover and back cover are made of the same material. There are square ridge and round ridge. Hardcover fabrics are mostly paper, fabric, lacquer paper, lacquer cloth, etc., which are generally equipped with protective covers. However, there is a kind of book with the title and pattern printed on the whole paper and laminated on the cardboard. This kind of book is mostly square ridge without protective cover
different materials on the spine surface, that is, the spine and cover are made of different materials. Usually, the spine is made of fabric, and the cover is made of paper mounted on a hardboard. This form is generally round spine without protective cover
c (floating mouth): 2 ~ 3mm f (wrapping): 13 ~ 15mm
e (slot width): 6 ~ 7mm H (paper and ridge interface): 6 ~ 7mm
k (cloth waist and paper edge width): 3 ~ 5mm g (middle seam width): d+2e
ridge same material:
a (cloth width): h+ 2c+2f
b (cloth length): 2s+d+2e 2c+2f
a (cardboard length): h+2c
b (cardboard width) : s-e+c
ridge abnormal material:
a (paper length): h+2c+2f
m (paper width): s-k-e+c+f
a (cloth waist length): h+2c+2f
l (cloth waist width): d+2e+2k+2h
a (middle seam paper length): h+2c
d (middle seam paper width): ridge arc length
first of all, the book is calculation method of clean ridge arc length:
no ridge (only rounding, no ridge) d= (130 ° × π × Book thickness/2)/180 °
ridged (rounded, ridged) d=[130 ° × π × (Book thickness +2 paperboard thickness)/2]/180 °
the materials and dimensions inside the spine are as follows: gauze length: h-20
gauze width: d+40
the plug cloth length is equal to the ridge arc length
the ribbon length is equivalent to the diagonal length of the book block
the size of the seal:
A (seal width): H +2c
Q (seal length): b-2f+2r
R is the seal.Choke, usually at 6 4-ball experimental machine: the dosage is less than 30mm. According to the size of the folio, the slitting can be made appropriately larger without wasting paper and convenient for printing
the sizes listed above are all the sizes after cutting. When designing the cover and protective cover, the incision should be considered, that is, 3mm incision should be left at the top, bottom, left and right during the design of the drawing
example 1 20 folio, finished product size 185 × 208, 112 sides of the text, 8 sides of the front and rear ring liners, and both the text and ring liners are printed with 80g/m2 double offset paper. For square ridge hardcover, seal the ridge with 120g/m2 coated paper, press the film after printing, and paste the hard shell. Use 1.5mm thick cardboard. How wide should the designer design the cover
there are two kinds of square spine hardcover, full cloth and full paper. The material size is the same. It is estimated that the thickness of the spine is 7mm
a (paper width): h+36=20 will directly affect the deformation and elongation after fracture of the experiment. 8+36=244 (mm)
b (paper length): 2s+d+2 × 1.5+48=2 × 185+7+3+48=428
a (cardboard length): h+6=208+6=214 (mm)
b (cardboard width): s-4===181 (mm)
cover designers can visit (244+6) × (428+6) i.e. 252 × 434 design on paper; When designing the pattern, the size of the wrapping should be removed to ensure the correct position of the pattern
example 2 16 folio, finished product size 185 × 260, 600 sides of the text, printed with 80g/m2 double offset paper, 8 sides of the front and rear ring linings with 120g/m2 double offset paper, the back cover with the same material, round spine hardcover, grilled round ridge, with 2mm thick cardboard, the thickness of the spine is calculated to be 34mm. Calculate the size of the cover and jacket of this book
a (cloth width): h+36=260+36=296 (mm)
b (cloth length): 2s+d+48=370+43+48=461 (mm)
d=[130 ° × π × (34+4)/2]/180 ° =43 (mm)
a (paperboard length): 260+6=266 (mm)
b (paperboard width): =181 (mm)
cover width: h+2c=260+6=266 (mm)
cover length: 2s+2e+2c+d+2r=2s+18+d+2r=431+2r
the cover designer can × (437+2r) the protective seal is designed inside the paper
example 3 32 folio, finished product size 130 × 185, 636 sides of the text, 52g/m2 convex board printing, front and back lining, title page inscription is 12 sides, using 80g/m2 double offset paper. The materials used for the ridge surface are different. The cover is paper, the waist is cloth, and 2mm thick cardboard is used, with a round ridge. It is estimated that the thickness of the spine is 26mm. Calculate the size of the cover design
a (paper length): h+36=185+36=221 (mm)
m (paper width): s+8=130+8=138 (mm)
a (cloth waist length): 221 (mm)
l (cloth waist width): [130 ° × π × (26+4)/2]/180 ° +36=70 (mm)
a (mid seam paper length): h+6=191 (mm)
d (mid seam paper width): [130 ° × π × (26+4)/2]/180 ° =34 (mm)
therefore: the designer can × 144 design on paper
through the analysis of typical examples, the binding designers are required to master the knowledge of the type, specification, performance and price of paper materials, the calculation method of book cost and price, printing technology and operation process; Only in this way can we avoid unnecessary economic losses in each link according to the nature of the book content and the level of readers, combined with material and technical conditions, and under the design principles of practicality, aesthetics and economy
